お母さん makes a lot of vocaloid music that’s in-line with straight poetry, and most are a bit depressing in one way or another. But I like them a lot! So I’ll be translating some of their songs, in time.

This one is a bit different than normal, but I noticed that I was understanding the point of the song pretty well immediately after listening to it and looking at some of the lyrics, so I absolutely wanted to translate it. It’s a nice experience to go through a translation line by line and have the story unfold before you. It’s a type of discovery feeling, and you never know if you’ll find something that’ll be lame or have you crying until you start it. Same for MMDs. It’s such a great feeling when your hunch that “this is a good MMD” pays off when you find out the dialogue makes it even better.

This MMD is really nice. It tries to explain exactly what Koishi is and how Koishi came to be. The author paints a picture where the subconscious of Koishi is the one we see in Touhou. That somehow, her real self is sealed away, or worse simply dead due to her actions. In place, she is trapped in a dream that is both real and not real. A dream she can’t wake up from, yet resets upon trying to wake up and becoming aware of herself.

Hello! This is a late night publishing of a translation but eh, I just felt like it. This is a translation Ice Fairy and I did a very long time ago, before we assumed the team status as Kōtta Kagayaki. Hey! So this is our first song translation. Songs are very, very hard compared to average dialogue in MMDs or Hand-Drawn works. They tend to use more complicated language as a whole, similes and metaphors, and ultimately Japanese language tricks that give verses more intrinsic meaning when put together. Also the Kanji can be used in creative ways to much the same effect, it’s all very out there compared to average Japanese language. But likewise, that’s what makes good lyrics writing interesting.
This song in particular wasn’t the hardest thing in the world compared to what we could have chosen, which is why it’s our first song-post. You can listen to the song below w/out subtitles at the moment.

“Cast a curse and two holes are dug” is a saying that postulates that if you curse someone else in some fashion, you will feel the repercussions of that curse in an equal amount. Basically, what we mean when we say “what goes around comes around” in the West. Chaka did an amazing job with this MMD, both in how the characters are depicted and the animation. And so, this is the opening post for Kōtta Kagayaki!. If you read our About page, you’ll see that we’re trying to focus on Touhou MMD and Hand-drawn fanworks, since after TouhouSubs went inactive, nobody has been around to translate these sorts of things. I’m excited to see all that we may translate and hopefully contribute to the fandom in the process.
I decided to open up with an easy translation I could do myself. Let me note that Ice Fairy is MUCH more skilled at Japanese than me. I’ll be handling translating literal translations into workable sentences using context or the multiple meanings words can hold and uploading onto Youtube most of the time.
